Perfect Storms and Hard Choices –HR Lessons of the Donner Party

In 1846, George Donner led a group of Midwestern farm families to California. They got bad advice, took unfortunate risks, were trapped in the Sierra Nevada - and many of the half that made it resorted to cannibalism to survive. The presentation has two parts – a chronology of the journey illustrated with Karl’s award-winning images from the trail, combined with “lessons learned” about HR practices and managing risk that can be applied to modern organizations.

College and Community Relations Committee Update

The Marian University Society of Human Resource Management Chapter participated in the 2016 Case Competition in Atlanta, GA, on March 4 and 5. Congrats Marian team!

Volunteers Needed!

We are in need of volunteers for resume reviews at the Operation Hire a Hoosier Vet Job Fair on April 20th from 10-2:30pm. We also have a pre-job fair work shop happening the week prior on April 13th, in the late afternoon/early evening and may need a few additional volunteers to help with this.

If you are interested in helping with either of these, please email william.dykstra@53.com

Fall 2016 Certification Study Group(s)

IndySHRM is planning to offer (assuming there is enough interest) both a SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP SHRM Certification study group as well as a separate study group for those interested in pursuing their PHR/SPHR certification with HRCI. Both study groups will start in either August or September (specifics TBD).

Volunteer Call Out – Certified HR Professionals

If you are currently a certified professional (SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certified for the SHRM Certification study group and/or PHR/SPHR certified to facilitate a module or two for the PHR/SPHR study group) who is not only passionate about helping others achieve their certification goals, but who are also subject matter experts in that particular HR discipline to facilitate a unit or two this fall (August/September – October/November 2016) please reach out to our IndySHRM Director of Certification, Jennifer Lange, SHRM-CP, PHR at jennifer.lange@oldnational.com.
