Spring into Action

Spring has sprung! The days are longer, the birds are chirping, and we start to get out of the cold weather funk. Now is also the time to "spring" into action and volunteer! Whether you start small or go big here are 5 tips to help you get started:

1.) Find your passion: Giving back and volunteering is one of my passions, but with the hustle and bustle of everyday life it is hard to balance and find the time. Time is limited so whatever you are involved in make sure it is the right fit for you. Not sure what your passion is??? Volunteering is a great way to give back and find out!

2.) Got Skills?: You got skills but do you know how to use them? Wether you have a knack for teaching or just enjoy meeting new people, use your skills to your advantage to give back to the community in which you live and work. Volunteering can also help with the development of a new skill, can help you gain work experience, and enhance your resume.

3.) Make it a Combo: We have already established that time is limited so why not combine your passion and other goals to give back. Volunteering not only helps build personal and professional relationships, but it could also help you achieve additional life goals.

4.) Grab a Friend: If you have never volunteered don't go at it alone! Grab a friend or maybe a family member and get involved. The more the merrier!

5.) Start: Remember you don't have to commit to be on the board of directors, but you do have to start somewhere. Be mindful of your availability and if you can only do something small it is a start. There are tons of opportunities out there- so what is stopping you from getting involved and making a difference in someone's life?

IndySHRM could not do what we do without our volunteers! It is through our volunteers that we are able to partner and support various organizations. Wether you are wanting to help with outreach events or get involved with a committee we are always looking for individuals that want to make a difference. The SHRM Foundation will award 220 certification scholarships…deadlines are April 10 and October 10, 2017 and each scholarship is $750 for SHRM Certification exam and/or preparation (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP). More Here

Member Spotlight – Keisha Underwood

Keisha Underwood joined Herman & Kittle Properties in 2014. In her role as Director of Human Resources, Keisha is responsible for leading the HR team in the design, planning and roll-out of all HR initiatives. She leads a team of HR professionals in the areas of talent acquisition; employee relations; payroll and benefits; and learning and development.
Prior to HKP, Keisha served as the Manager of HR and Office Operations for Suburban Health Organization for 14 years. The position required her to collaborate with the HR leaders at more than ten suburban hospitals across Central Indiana.

Keisha is a graduate of Indiana University. She is also a SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP). Keisha volunteers for several HR associations in Indianapolis such as IndySHRM, Indiana State HR Counsel (membership) and the Indiana HR Conference Committee. Read More

Resolve to Recertify Your SHRM Certification in 2017

Many of us technically don’t have to recertify our SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification until 2018, but why wait – do it in 2017!
