What’s New for You in 2015?

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season, with plenty of time for rejoicing, relaxing and rejuvenating, so you can attack the new year with vigor and purpose.

What’s new for you this year?

One of my biggest “news” is the opportunity to serve as your President. I am honored to serve you and this organization, and look forward to a really stellar year.

Other “news” for IndySHRM this year include:

  • New Goals: we reached our goal of 900 members in 2014, so our new goal for 2015 is 1,000.
  • New Certification: The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP is rolling out with the first set of the new SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP exams administered in the spring. IndySHRM will do a study group for the new certification in time for the winter exam window. On January 5th, an online Tutorial becomes available for any current HRCI (PHR/SPHR) certified professional to earn their equivalent SHRM designation.
  • New Community Service Initiatives: Last year we asked you where you would like to make an even bigger difference in our community. Look for new service opportunities throughout the year.
  • New Programs: Look for new topics and speakers throughout our forums. Any program that meets the criteria will be pre-approved for both HRCI and SHRM re-certification credits.

That’s just some of our “news”. So, what’s new for you? Whether it’s a new job, new promotion, new certification, or new volunteer opportunity, we look forward to being part of your new year!

Amy Hardesty, SHRM-SCP, SPHR

IndySHRM’s PHR/SPHR Study Group (February – April 2015)

If you are planning to sit for the PHR or SPHR exam this spring, don’t go it alone. Our IndySHRM PHR/SPHR Study Group is an excellent way to add structure, accountability and a supportive peer network to your PHR/SPHR exam preparation – in addition, IndySHRM offers one of the most affordable programs around! Our IndySHRM study group sessions are facilitated by PHR/SPHR certified professionals who are not only passionate about helping others achieve their certification goals, but who are also subject matter experts in that particular HR discipline.

For the PHR/SPHR study group, we will be using materials from Human Resources Certification Preparation (www.HRCP.com) – in 2015, the SHRM Learning System will ONLY be made for the SHRM Certification prep; it no longer is in publication to help those preparing for their PHR/SPHR exam. The HRCP materials cover the six (6) areas of the HR Body of Knowledge (Strategic Business Management, Workforce Planning and Employment, Human Resource Development, Total Rewards, Employee and Labor Relations and Risk Management) and IndySHRM study group participants will receive both HRCP hardcopy booklets, paper flashcards AND HRCP’s online/web based version of the booklets and flashcards (materials are INCLUDED in the price of the PHR/SPHR study group.)

Our IndySHRM study group will run 12 weeks which means it will start Tuesday, February 3 and run through Tuesday, April 21 – the spring 2015 HRCI (PHR/SPHR) testing window is May 1 – July 31, 2015. We will be meeting weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 – 8:30 pm DOWTOWN at Harrison College’s Admin Building (500 North Meridian Street, lower level conference room – free onsite parking is available.)

The cost for the IndySHRM PHR/SPHR study group (which includes the HRCP hardcopy booklets, paper flashcards AND online/web based version of the booklets and flashcards) will be *:

$750 = current/active IndySHRM members
$875 = those who join IndySHRM (membership for 365 days = $125) and get the study group for the $750 member rate
$1,000 = non-members

Materials will be available for pickup on the first night (full payment must be received before materials are handed out); for an extra $25 materials can be shipped directly to you prior to the first night (materials won’t be shipped until after January 7)

*$75 late fee will be added for study group registrations on/after January 26

PHR/SPHR Exam Eligibility: The study group is ONLY open to those eligible to sit for either the PHR or SPHR exam – check the eligibility requirements online at https://www.hrci.org/our-programs/becoming-certified/requirements-and-eligibility

Further, you can learn anything/everything about the PHR/SPHR certification on the Human Resource Certification Institute’s (HRCI) website at www.hrci.org (and check out the Certification Handbook)

The study group is limited to 25 participants – REGISTER ASAP to secure your spot.

You can register for the IndySHRM study group online now at www.indyshrm.org > Resources > Certification Study Groups (and the registration link is embedded in the content)

PHR/SPHR Exam Registration: To register for the actual PHR or SPHR exam, please visit http://www.hrci.org/apply/application-process for the May 1 – July 31, 2015 testing window. HRCI is already accepting PHR/SPHR exam applications (regular deadline is March 13, 2015 and the late deadline is March 14 – April 17, 2015.)

QUESTIONS/CONCERNS: Please contact our IndySHRM Director of Certification, Jennifer Lange (PHR), at Jennifer.Lange@oldnational.com or 317-705-6767.

SHRM Certification: FYI, the plan is for IndySHRM to offer a study group for the new SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certifications in the fall 2015 (study group would be September – November); you can learn more about the new SHRM Certification at www.SHRMCertification.org.

IndySHRM Volunteer Opportunity – PHR/SPHR Study Group Facilitators
IndySHRM is once again looking for current PHR/SPHR certified professionals who are not only passionate about helping others achieve their certification goals, but who are also subject matter experts in that particular HR discipline to facilitate a unit or two this spring (February – April 2015) for our PHR/SPHR study group that kicks off the first week of February.

We will be using materials from Human Resources Certification Preparation (www.hrcp.com) – in 2015, the SHRM Learning System will ONLY be made for the SHRM Certification prep; it no longer is in publication to help those preparing for their PHR/SPHR exam. IndySHRM used the HRCP materials several years ago and had success with them. HRCP also offers participants both printed materials and materials online (for reading on an e-reader/mobile device) in addition to flashcards and study questions, etc. Facilitators will have access to HRCP’s instructional overheads and a PowerPoint presentation, as well as discussion questions for each functional area in the program. I’m also working to ensure facilitators have a copy of the participant materials (either hardcopy or e-version.)

So I’m looking for volunteers for:

• Workforce Planning and Employment part 1 on Tuesday, February 24
• Workforce Planning and Employment part 2 on Tuesday, March 3
• Employee and Labor Relations part 1 on Tuesday, April 7
• Risk Management (entire unit) on Tuesday, April 21

Also, this volunteer opportunity is eligible for HRCI recertification credits – for each hour of IndySHRM PHR/SPHR study group presentation time you can submit 1.5 recertification credits (to take into account the time spent preparing) – credit is only awarded the first time the session is presented and should be logged under the “Instruction” category. For example, the first time you facilitate a specific unit (i.e. part 1 of Strategic Management) for 2.5 hours of presentation time you will be eligible for 3.75 hours of recertification credit under the Instruction category (2.5 hours of presentation at 1.5 hours of credit for each hour of presentation time = 3.75 recertification credits.)

Our IndySHRM study group runs for 12 weeks total and will be meeting on Tuesday evenings (February 3 – April 21) from 6:00 – 8:30 pm downtown in Harrison College’s Admin Building (500 North Meridian Street, lower level conference room – free onsite parking is available.)

Also, if you know of anyone who may be interested in participating in the PHR/SPHR study group OR facilitating a module for the study group -- please contact our Director of Certification (Jen Lange, PHR) at either 317-705-6767 or email jennifer.lange@oldnational.com – or send their contact info directly to Jen.

Don’t Forget – SHRM Book Club Offers a Way to Recertify PHR/SPHR Certifications
Just a reminder that you can earn PHR/SPHR recertification credits (with HRCI) through SHRM’s Book Club. You can earn 2.5 credits per book for a maximum of 20 credits per recertification cycle. These credits (obtained by completing the books/quizzes) should be logged under the “Continuing Education” category. You can earn credits this way IN ADDITION TO the free SHRM webinars (that you can earn up to 20 credits per recertification cycle.) More information about the SHRM book club can be found at http://www.shrm.org/communities/volunteerresources/pages/hrcishrmstorebookclub.aspx

SHRM Certification (SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP) News
The time is here – January 5 marks the first day that the SHRM Certification Pathway tutorial goes live. HR professionals who currently hold their HRCI certification (PHR/SPHR) can obtain SHRM’s new certification (SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP) at NO COST in 2015 (specifically, January 5 – December 31, 2015) by meeting the following criteria: 1) your HRCI certification is in good standing, 2) acknowledge/sign the SHRM Code of Ethics, and 3) participate in SHRM’s online HR competency tutorial (this is not an exam nor is it pass/fail.) After completing all three (3) between January 5 – December 31, 2015 you will have obtained the new SHRM certification for FREE.

It is important to note that those with HRCI’s PHR certification will be eligible to obtain SHRM’s SHRM-CP (certified professional) certification and those with HRCI’s SPHR will be eligible to obtain SHRM’s SHRM-SCP (senior certified professional) certification. At this time, SHRM does not have a certification that aligns with the GPHR. Also, this FREE way to obtain the new SHRM certification is only good through December 31, 2015.

Another item to take note of is the FREE offering above is available to those who sit for and pass HRCI’s PHR/SPHR during this winter testing window (December 1, 2014 – January 31, 2015.)

SHRM’s certification will have a three (3) year recertification cycle (recertification is $100 for national SHRM members and $150 for non-members) and will follow the birthday rule (like HRCI now does.) For example, if a current PHR/SPHR certified individual (who was born in the month of November) obtains the new SHRM certification in February 2015 – the three (3) year recertification cycle would be valid until February 2018, but since they have a November birthday…their recertification cycle actually then goes from February 2018 to November 2018. Recertification requires 60 credits (and you have three (3) years to obtain 60 credits. NOTE: Only credits obtained after you’ve received the SHRM certification count toward the SHRM certification recertification.) Both HRCI’s and SHRM’s recertification process is independent of one another (but programming may be certified for recertification through both HRCI and SHRM) and each has its own recertification application cost associated with it (so you will need to pay two (2) separate recertification fees to recertify both of your certifications.)

HR professionals can obtain/maintain BOTH the HRCI and SHRM certification credential.
For 2015, both national SHRM and IndySHRM will continue to provide HRCI recertification credits in addition to offering recertification credits for the new SHRM certification.

Another item to note is that the SHRM certification has an expanded eligibility matrix for the SHRM certification exams. A couple of highlights – when calculating experience in an HR role for the SHRM certification exam – it can be either non-exempt or exempt, it defines more than 1,000 hours in a calendar year in an HR role is equal to one (1) year of experience for exam eligibility, and also has a certificate program for those with less than a Bachelor’s Degree. More information regarding the SHRM certification can be found at www.shrmcertification.org

Our goal continues to be to support our members through SHRM’s Certification rollout as much as possible and maintain the integrity of our current certifications. We will continue to share any information that we receive with you as it relates to these certification changes.
