President's Pen

2016 is going to be another exciting year for IndySHRM.

By Amy Wright, SHRM-SCP, SPHR

Amy Hardesty - IndySHRM President
Our goals this year include strengthening the quality of our programming, reaching wider and digging deeper into membership engagement and experience, advancing our profession through the SHRM certification, and continuing to partner with a variety of organizations throughout the Indianapolis community.

To ensure that we are providing the most valuable and relevant program content, we have re-branded three of our Forums, so they are all aligned with the SHRM BoCK (Body of Competency and Knowledge). The Staffing Management Forum is now Talent Acquisition and Retention; program content will have a broader reach throughout the entire talent management process. The Strategic Leaders Forum is now Business and HR Strategy; still providing strategic HR content, but designed to help the HR professional develop strong business acumen. And finally the Main Event is now Technology and Data. This is a new forum for us! Technology and data analytics have never been more important to our profession or our development as professionals, so this is the perfect time to launch this new forum.

In the area of membership you will see some changes to our dues structure. As a SHRM affiliate chapter, we believe there is significant value in becoming a member of SHRM (national) as well as IndySHRM. To encourage dual membership, we have reduced IndySHRM annual membership dues for SHRM members.

We will be offering SHRM and HRCI certification study groups in the spring and fall, and we will continue to certify our programs for both HRCI and SHRM re-certification credits. If you are not yet a certified profeassional, I encourage you to make it a goal for 2016.

And finally we will be continuing our partnerships in our community including OHHV, Starfish, Horizon House, Out and Equal, The Diversity Roundtable of Central IN and our newest, the BLN. These are all very worthy organizations through which we can equip central Indiana residents for better positions in the workforce.

One of our first programs of the year will be our Board Meet and Greet on January 26th at Dave and Buster’s. I hope to see you there. Thank you for your membership in IndySHRM. We look forward to serving you.

Updates & Blogs

Programs Update

IndySHRM has an exciting lineup for 2016 programs. Some of the forum titles have been changed in order to provide information relevant for continuing education and certification. Our forums will align with the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge. IndySHRM forums are as follows:

• Networking
• Compensation & Benefits
• HR Law
• Talent Acquisition & Retention
• HR Business Strategy
• Diversity & Inclusion
• HR Technology

Please be sure to visit IndySHRM website event tab to view the upcoming forums for 2016.

Workforce Readiness Update

The Workforce Readiness Committee is looking to add committee members to join our very active team, for the upcoming year. This is a great way to get active in Indy SHRM and in the community. We average 1-2 events per month. So there will be some need to be flexible to get out of the office to attend for these events. However, the goal is that each committee member only has to do this 1-2 per quarter. The Key Responsibilities: We offer resources and support to those who want to prepare to transition into the workforce. We assist many different groups who are interested in job search preparation, including IndySHRM transitional members, veterans, high school students, etc. Examples of some of our activities include speed networking sessions, resume review assistance, mock interviewing, support at local job fairs, and developing training resources.

HR/SPHR Certification Study Groups

Thinking About Sitting for the PHR/SPHR Exam May 1 - July 31, 2016?

If you are planning to sit for HRCI’s PHR or SPHR exam this spring, don’t go it alone. Our IndySHRM PHR/SPHR Study Group is an excellent way to add structure, accountability and a supportive peer network to your PHR/SPHR exam preparation – in addition, IndySHRM offers one of the most affordable programs around! Our IndySHRM study group sessions are facilitated by PHR/SPHR certified professionals who are not only passionate about helping others achieve their certification goals, but who are also subject matter experts in that particular HR discipline.
